A letter to my future daughter...

Little One,

This is a strange and crazy world you’re being born into. I’m sorry I couldn’t make it perfect for you, but this only means that you can be part of the change. A lot of things won’t make sense at first, but you WILL get the hang of it. Even though I’m writing this years before you’re even conceived, I want you to know that I love you so much and you already give me hope for this place. I’m doing my best right now and I think that’s all we can ever hope to do. I want to make you some promises right now and I will keep each and every one. Pinky swear.

I promise to teach you only to love, never to hate. There is enough hate in everyone else and all it does is eat you up inside. It poisons your mind and banishes happiness from your heart. That will not be something you learn from me.
I promise to never tell you what you can and cannot do with your own body. You belong to only yourself. There may be things I don’t agree with, but you are your own person and you need to be allowed to explore that. You will never hear the words “cover up” from me. Although, you MAY hear “bundle up” if it’s cold outside…but that’s different. <3
I promise to support you, no matter what your endeavors may be. I will worry, as all mamas do, but I will never tell you “You can’t.” You will never be stuffed into a box that I expect you to fill. This is your life, honey, not mine.
I promise to be honest with you. That boy isn’t picking on you because “he likes you”. He’s picking on you because he’s a little shit and you don’t need that. Now let’s talk about where babies come from.
I promise to teach you to be strong, fearless, and independent. There’s nothing wrong with being a princess and it’s okay to need help, but you are your own hero first, my love. You don’t need anyone else to save you. You are strong. You are mighty. You are glorious.

These are my promises to you, sweet girl. Whoever you turn out to be, know that as long as you are happy and kind to others, you will never disappoint me. You will never face this world alone, little one. I promise.

All my love,

Mama
